2020 Fun Troll Loppet Report
The 59th Annual Loppet!
The Castlegar Nordic Ski Club (CNSC), in collaboration with the Sons of Norway, held their 59th Annual Troll Loppet at Mud Lake on Saturday, January 18th 2020. 146 skiers of all ages and abilities braved the roads and the snowy conditions for an incredible powdery ski day!
Our beloved and iconic Viking Troll (Conrad Brattebo) once again made his way from the Valhalla Mountains to grace skiers with his presence and to call out the start of the race.
A few minor technical difficulties kept skiers on their toes; the start of the race was delayed by 10 minutes to give those tardy arrivals time to check in and the race clock started approximately 10 minutes late as well.
The temperature at the Viking Centre hovered around minus 7 degrees for the majority of the day and the powdery snow made it for quite a fast and picturesque day!
Skiers participated 7 different races; from the Super Tiny Trolls skiing for 2km around Mud Lake to the 40km Gold race tracing the perimeter of the Club’s tracks. The Super Tiny Trolls were rewarded with Cookie Medals whereas the other races received a tuque with built in headlamp for their efforts.
Something new this year for our Troll Loppet racers: the course was not only marked with the coloured arrow, but also with the race length that corresponded to the colour! This of course helps our skiers ensure they are following the right course as they are racing through our hill.
A big thank you to Conrad Brattebo (Club Historian), Kim Matson, Audrey Andre, Winston Fayant, the CSNC Executive and the trackers, Dr. Walton and all of the volunteers, you are the heart and soul that continue to make this event a success! We couldn’t do this without you!
A thank you also goes out to the business in the community contributed to the success of the event: Castlegar Tim Hortons for the coffee, hot chocolate and timbits; Safeway Castlegar for the funds to go towards snacks for the skiers; Mallard’s Source For Sports Castlegar for the draw prizes of gift cards for each race category; Yellowhead Road & Bridge (Kootenay) Ltd for clearing the parking lot Saturday morning.
Congratulations to our prize draw winners; each won a $25 gift certificate donated by Mallards:
Super Tiny Troll (2km): Ava Fostveor
Tiny Troll (8km): Brock Hall
Super Troll (10km): Valen Diplock
Mega Troll (16km): Eamon Hawksbee

And lastly a big thank you to our skiers, for braving the road conditions, for participating in the race, and most of all for the smiles, and positive attitude that makes us want to bring this event back every year!!
