A great turnout for the return of the Troll Loppet! (Photo Gallery)
It was a day for the books on Sunday, January 22nd, 2023 – It was a record turnout, and the best conditions you could ask for to welcome back the Fun Troll Loppet after 3 years!
A Big thanks to Nelson Nordic Ski Club and @blackjackskiclub for coming out with their race teams! Thanks to everyone who came out from all over the Kootenays, the province and beyond to enjoy the trails and carry on the tradition.
This was also Castlegar Nordic ski team’s first official race. Way to go team!
So, this event isn’t a competition, but these are some people who did exceptionally well at crossing the finish line very quickly:
For the 2km and 8km it was Alice Hartman and West Kos leading the pack.
In the 20km event Mike Bernard, Krista Svedahl, Owen Kyle, and Annika Heale are our honourable mentions for adult and youth finishers.
In the 30km, it was Kaelum Smith and Maya Abraham followed by their Nelson Nordic team members.
And Mckenzie Gibson finished at the head of the pack for the 40km event.
Amazing job everyone!

We’d like to thank all of the local sponsors of this event including Safeway, Kootenay Market, No Frills, Kootenay Valley and Canadian Tire. A very special thanks to Gord Zaitsoff for clearing out our parking lot just in time for the event and to Mallards Source for Sports for providing the gift-certificate prizes.
Great job to Ida Price, all of the board members of Castlegar Nordic and the dedicated volunteers who put on a great event for the Nordic ski community!
And a final thank you to the trail grooming team who set up our the entire trail system with the most ideal track conditions you could ask for the morning of the event!
Here are some of the weekend highlights to enjoy:
